Subject presentation

Introduction to the subject:
The Monographic Project of English (TMI- Trabajo Monográfico de Inglés) is a subject for students of the 4th year of ESO. The general aims of this subject are as follows:
- To work upon students’ abilities in choosing a topic and working on it following some specific techniques and methodologies.
- To develop students’ skills in using different tools, sources and materials to get specific information.
- To develop students’ social skills in working with other students.
- To develop students’ linguistic competence by working in English, both orally and written.
- To develop students’ cultural competence by dwelling with some cultural aspects of the English speaking countries.
- To raise students’ awareness of the importance of English in its different manifestations.
- To improve students’ skills in communication and information techniques by working on some power-points presentations.

Contents:
Students will have to choose one of the following areas to work upon. Then, they will have to choose a specific topic of one of these areas. The topic will have to be discussed with the teacher so as to decide the span of the idea and the relation with other related matters.
-Language Focus: Some ideas inside this area can be: English borrowings, English in Villena, Computer language, Technology Language,
-Literature Focus: Some ideas inside this area are: literature through the times, Greates English writers, Greatest English works, women writers, English literature for children and teenagers,
-Culture Focus: Some ideas inside this part are: English around the world, English-speaking countries, topics on UK, Ireland, USA, Australia…

Students’ work:
At the end of each term, students will have to hand in some work that will be explained in due time. By the end of the course, students will have to do three different tasks that will build up the final mark:
-Project development & everyday work (30% of final mark)
-Written paper (50% of final mark): This is the project itself, with the different parts, ideas developed and topics that have been studied and worked upon through the course. The project must have, at least, these different parts:
 Explanation on why topic was chosen.
 Introduction.
 Specific part(s) on project topic.
 General part/paragraph connected with other ideas
 Any other part that the students think necessary can be added to the written paper just after the introduction.
 (The project can have pictures, photographs, quotations, statistics, surveys and can be handed in with any other additional document that has been made throughout the course.)
-Oral presentation & power-point (20% of final mark): Students will present their work in English before the rest of the class and in this presentation they must summarize the most important ideas of the project. A written paper can be used to help students follow the presentation but it need not be handed in.
Students will use a power-point presentation to present their project. This power-point presentation must be a helpful tool for students to speak in front of the class.
